The problem

Many Honda Civic 7 and Civic 8 owners have experienced a problem with the heater blower not working properly.

Owners may experience an intermittent heater blower fan, on one or more of the speed settings, or the fan may not work all, or only on full power, or may be stuck on full power.

The cause can be a fault in the electronic control panel, the resistor pack, or the blower motor.
The most common cause however is:
A faulty Heater Resistor.
(otherwise known as the Resistor Pack, Heater Blower Resistor, Rheostat, or Blower Motor Resistor, Dropper Resistor, or just Resistor , or Transistor)

Resistor Pack for Honda Civic Mk 7, 8

To buy a new resistor pack from Honda would cost in the region of £100, so it obviously makes sense to try and pin-point the source of the problem.

The cause

If the blower is dead, or only runs at fast speed.
If the fan runs at fast speed only, this indicates the resistor pack is short circuit.
If there is no blower fan action at all, check for an open circuit fuse, or bad relay first, then check the  resistor pack and the blower motor itself.
Also, a seized or partially seized blower motor can cause the resistor pack to fail.

The solution

To access the resistor pack, and the blower fan:
1. Remove the glovebox compartment by removing the 2 bolts under it.
2. This reveals the ECU There are 3 bolts - 2 at the bottom and 1 at the top. Remove these and the ECU can be lowered carefully - it's still attached by the cables.
There will be enough room to reach the resistor.
3. It is awkward as it is a little buried amongst cables, but its not impossible. The resistor is on the left side of the fan casing and is held in by 2 screws. Just remove the cable connector first and then remove those screws
You could buy a new Resistor Pack from Honda, at £100 or so.
If it doesn't fix your problem, that is dead money.
Alternatively, you could get your own Resistor Pack repaired by our expert technicians, who will give you a satisfaction guarantee that lasts for 12 months.
